Current Medical Marijuana Legal Status in Arizona
Originally published 10/14/14
Although federal law still prohibits the recreational use of Cannabis, currently 23 states and D.C have legalized Marijuana for Medicinal purposes. In August 2013, the Department of Justice issued a memo de-prioritizing prosecution of citizens following their states medical marijuana laws. As research of marijuana and its medicinal properties have continued to show promising results, the industry for Medical Marijuana has arrived. Now, state licensed dispensaries are able to sell lab tested marijuana and provide details about each batch including the amount of THC and CBD present in that particular plant. Anecdotal reports of success by thousands of MMJ card holders have been collected by dispensary agents and MMJ Certification Doctors.
Here in Arizona, legislation was passed in 2010 to allow registered patients to obtain marijuana from state licensed dispensaries, such as SWC Tempe and SWC Prescott (203 Organix), to treat their qualifying conditions. These approved conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe and chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures (including epilepsy), and severe or persistent muscle spasms (including multiple sclerosis). Beginning on Jan.1, 2015, PTSD will also be considered a qualifying condition. If you qualify for a MMJ card, applying for the card is a simple process so long as you follow the steps.
